Built to be effortless

The whole point is that logging a habit takes no effort, so you keep doing it long enough for the patterns to show.

Log in seconds

One tap to record the moment. Add what you were doing, where you were and how you felt, or skip them entirely. Recording takes no time at all.

Activities, locations & moods

Choose from quick tappable chips or add your own. The categories are yours to reorder, hide and extend so the tracker fits your life, not the other way round.

Patterns & insights

A dashboard turns your entries into daily counts, time-of-day distribution, ranked activities and locations, mood patterns and the combinations that recur most.

Judgement-free by design

No motivational clutter, no guilt messages, no nagging notifications. Just a calm register of what happened and when, so you can see your own behaviour clearly.

Offline & installable

A progressive web app you add to your home screen. Log without a connection and your records sync the moment you're back online.

Export & backup

Your data stays yours. Export to CSV or a full JSON backup, import a backup, or print a factual summary report whenever you need it.

Three taps to a clearer picture

1

Tap to log

Open the app and tap the prominent plus button. The current local time is recorded automatically.

2

Add context

Optionally pick an activity, a location and a mood from tappable chips. Skip anything that doesn't apply.

3

See the pattern

Your dashboard surfaces when, where and why your habits happen, with factual insights based only on what you logged.

What it looks like

A clearer picture, the longer you use it

A few months in, your dashboard turns hundreds of quick taps into a picture of when, where and why your habits happen. Here is the kind of view it builds.

After a few months of quick taps, the dashboard surfaces the patterns you would never spot from memory. Factual observations, not advice and not judgement.

Most of your entries happen between 7am and 10am.

Working is your most common activity, at 32% of entries.

You log more on weekdays than weekends.

Your daily average fell from 9.2 to 5.8 over the last 30 days.

Why Habit Trace exists

It started with a cigarette. And a piece of paper.

The idea for Habit Trace came about after a visit to a smoking cessation clinic. I had been talking to the adviser about my smoking habits, and she suggested something quite sensible: every time I had a cigarette, I should write down when I had it, where I was and what I was doing at the time.

The idea was to identify patterns. Was I smoking because I was stressed? Bored? Having a coffee? Driving? Or simply because it was something I had always done?

It made perfect sense. But there was one problem.

I could not be bothered to write down every cigarette on a piece of paper.

Honestly, the thought of carrying around a notebook, finding a pen and recording every cigarette throughout the day seemed ridiculous. I knew I would either forget, lose the paper or give up recording them altogether.

And then I thought, hang on. Why not just build something?

Something ridiculously simple. Open an app, tap a button, record what I was doing and where I was. Done. A few seconds, no paperwork, no fuss. So that is what I did.

And as I started building it, something occurred to me.

Why stop at cigarettes?

The exact same principle could apply to almost anything. Drinking. Snacking. Nail-biting. Scrolling through social media. Procrastinating. Exercise. Reading. Whatever habit someone wants to understand, whether it is something they would like to stop, reduce, increase or simply become more aware of.

Because the interesting thing about habits is not always how often we do them. It is when we do them. Where we do them. What we are doing at the time. And sometimes, how we are feeling.

That is where the patterns start to appear.

And that is how a simple cigarette counter became Habit Trace.

No judgement. No lectures. Just understanding.

Habit Trace is not here to tell you what you should or should not be doing. It does not care whether you are tracking something positive, negative, embarrassing or completely ordinary. It is not a competition. There are no leaderboards, no public profiles and no pressure to hit somebody else's targets.

It is simply a tool to help you understand your own behaviour. What you choose to track is your business. What you discover is for you to decide what to do with.

I built Habit Trace because I wanted something simple enough that I would actually use it. And I figured that if I found it useful, perhaps somebody else would too.

Every habit has a pattern. Discover yours.
