Everything it does, in one place
Habit Trace is deliberately simple to use and quietly comprehensive underneath. Here is the full set of capabilities, so you know exactly what you're getting before you start tracking.
Built around how habits actually work
The interesting thing about a habit isn't always how often it happens. It's when. Where. What you were doing. And sometimes, how you felt.Habit Trace captures all of it, then turns it into a picture you can actually read.
Logging in seconds
Tap the prominent plus button and the current local date and time are recorded automatically. Add optional context or save straight away. A habit entry takes a few seconds.
Set your own habit word
Call the habit you are tracking whatever you like. The word you choose appears throughout the app, the dashboard and the exports. It can be a plain label or a personal code word.
Resisted cravings
Log the moments you felt the urge but did not act on it, recorded separately from the habits you gave in to, so the picture includes the times you held back as well as the times you didn't.
Life moments
Record significant milestones on a timeline, from a new job to a bereavement, with the impact they had. They sit alongside your habit log so you can see what was going on when behaviour shifted.
Activities you control
Pick from the built-in activities (Working, Driving, After eating and more) or add your own. Reorder them to match your life, hide the ones you never use, and keep custom ones for as long as they apply.
Locations you control
Choose a location from tappable chips (Home, Office, Car, Outside and more) or add your own. No GPS or location permission is used. Locations are selected manually, ordered and hidden to suit you.
Moods, optional
Optionally pick how you felt (Stressed, Relaxed, Anxious, Habit/Automatic and more) or add your own. Mood logging can be turned off entirely in settings if you don't want it.
Pattern dashboard
A dashboard turns your entries into daily counts, a time-of-day distribution, ranked activities and locations, mood patterns and the activity-and-location combinations that recur most.
Factual insights
Automatically generated observations based only on what you logged, such as the hours you record most or whether your average has changed week over week. They only appear once there is enough data.
Searchable history
Every entry is kept in a chronological register grouped by date. Edit any entry, delete an incorrect one with confirmation, add a missed entry with a past date and time, and filter by date range, activity or location.
Cost and time
Optionally track what the habit costs you. Set a currency, a cost per pack, a pack size and the minutes each instance takes, and the dashboard tallies the spend and the time over the period you've been logging.
Export, import and reports
Export to CSV for spreadsheets, export a full JSON backup, import a backup with validation and duplicate protection, and print a factual summary report for a period, including totals, common activities, locations and times.
Theme and accent
Choose a light or dark theme, and pick an independent accent colour. The accent changes the look of the app without being tied to the light or dark mode you've chosen.
Sound and haptics
Confirm each save with a chosen tone and volume, and a vibration on devices that support it. Turn either off, preview them in settings, and the app adapts to what your device can do.
Offline and installable
A progressive web app you add to your home screen on iPhone or Android. Log without a connection and your records sync to your account the moment you are back online. Records survive a refresh, a restart or a cleared tab.
Calm by design
No motivational clutter, no guilt messages, no streaks designed to shame you, no advertising. Just a clear register of what happened and when, so you can see your own behaviour without judgement.
Six parts of one calm picture
Each capability is simple on its own. Together they build a fuller picture of your behaviour than a count on its own ever could.
Record a moment in a few seconds
- One tap opens the logging panel and stamps the current local time.
- Set the word for the habit you track. It appears everywhere in the app.
- Log a craving you resisted, recorded separately from the habits you gave in to.
- Add optional notes in your own words for anything the chips don't cover.
Activities, locations and moods that fit you
- Add your own activities, locations and moods and reuse them on every log.
- Reorder them so the ones you reach for most sit where your thumb does.
- Hide the built-in defaults you never use without deleting them.
- Renaming or removing a category never changes your past records.
See when, where and why it happens
- Today, yesterday, this week, last week, 7-day and 30-day averages and your running total.
- A daily counts bar chart over the last 7, 14 or 30 days.
- Events grouped by hour of day, from midnight to late evening.
- Ranked activities and locations with counts and percentages.
- Mood patterns and the most frequent activity-and-location combinations.
The fuller picture
- Track spend with a selectable currency, a cost per pack and a pack size.
- Tally the minutes each instance takes, rolling up from minutes to hours to days.
- Record life moments on a timeline, with the impact each one had.
- See them alongside your habit log so a change in behaviour has context.
Everything you logged, when you need it
- A searchable, filterable register of every entry, grouped by date.
- Edit any entry, delete an incorrect one with confirmation, back-date a missed one.
- Filter by date range, activity or location to narrow in on part of your behaviour.
- Permanently clear all records with confirmation when you want a fresh start.
Take it with you
- Export to CSV for spreadsheets and analysis elsewhere.
- Export a full JSON backup and import it back with validation and duplicate protection.
- Print a factual summary report for a chosen period for an adviser or yourself.
- Settings warn that local records can be lost if you clear browser data without a backup.
Start with one tap
Every feature above is there from your first entry. Nothing to unlock, nothing to configure before you begin.
Associations, not causes
Insights describe patterns in your recorded data, not proof that an activity causes a habit. Habit Trace never invents a pattern it can't see.
No nagging
No push notifications, no streaks, no judgement. The only sound it makes is the one you choose to confirm a save.
Works the way your phone does
Haptics where they're supported, a sound tone and volume you choose, and a quiet fallback where they're not. Habit Trace adapts to your device.
