Your habits. Your data. Your business.
Habit Trace is built to collect as little as possible and to keep what it does collect scoped to your account. This is a plain-English description of how that works.
What we ask for at sign-up
An email address and a password. You enter the password twice to make sure it is what you intended. No name, no photo, no postal address and no profile details are requested. No email verification is required to start using the app, so no confirmation email is sent.
Because an email address is required, Habit Trace is not anonymous. The email identifies your account and is used to sign you back in.
What you record
When you log a habit, Habit Trace stores the timestamp, the activity and location you chose, an optional mood, an optional free-text note, and whether you resisted a craving. You can also record life moments (significant events) that may help explain a change in your behaviour. All of this is private habit data that you choose to record.
Where your records live
Your habit records are stored in your account on Habit Trace's managed backend and cached locally on your device for offline use. Records are scoped to your account, so other users cannot see them through the application, and they are not publicly displayed or shared.
Habit Trace does not routinely monitor or review the habits you record. It does not, however, claim that your records can never be accessed by the operator of the service, and it does not claim the service is anonymous.
Passwords and security
Passwords are handled by the authentication provider and are not stored in plaintext. Authentication uses signed session tokens. Habit Trace never asks for, displays or logs your password.
Clearing and deleting records
You can delete a single entry from your history at any time. That performs a permanent removal of that individual record.
You can also clear all of your records from within the app. This hides them from your app view and resets your counts, but it is not the same as permanent erasure: a timestamped copy of the cleared records is retained, tied to your account, and may be kept until it is later removed. Habit Trace does not claim zero data retention.
Habit Trace does not currently offer a one-click account-deletion feature. If you want your account and its associated records permanently erased, contact support to request account deletion, and we will confirm what has been removed and what may be retained. Records may also be present in routine backups until those backups are themselves removed.
Law enforcement and legal disclosure
We respect your privacy and only access, use or disclose personal information where necessary for the operation and security of the service, or where permitted or required by applicable law. Where legally justified, that may include responding to lawful requests from law-enforcement authorities, or addressing a serious or immediate threat to safety.
Habit Trace does not give automatic or unrestricted access to your records, does not disclose records merely because a request claims to come from law enforcement, and does not build its products to surveil users. Any response to a lawful request is limited to what the request lawfully requires and is handled through the operator's standard processes.
What we do not do
- We do not embed advertising trackers or third-party advertising SDKs.
- We do not sell or share your habit records.
- We do not request GPS or location permissions from your device.
- We do not use your records to train models or build advertising profiles.
Habit Trace uses Google Analytics to measure aggregate website traffic (such as overall page views). It does not share your habit records with analytics, and it does not embed advertising trackers, ad networks, or sell personal data. Error reports may transmit technical diagnostic information like error messages and stack traces for debugging; these do not include your habit records.
Export and backup
Your data is yours. You can export to CSV, export a full JSON backup, import a JSON backup to restore, and print a factual summary report from settings at any time. If you clear browser data, uninstall the app or change phones without exporting a backup, local records may be lost.
